Arizmendi remains doubtful for the first game in 2014. Culio is training without problems despite the rumours. The rival arrives to the meeting after the recent negative results, but with only one casualty at their squad.

It has been an unusual week at Deportivo due to the holidays. Ahead of the visit to Real Jaén (Sunday, 18h15 CET) the first team returned to train on Monday after a week off; despite the low temperatures the coaching staff scheduled the first two sessions for the evening, both were long (lasting almost two hours) and intensive as the players were going to rest on Wednesday. Things returned to normal mode on Thursday as the squad trained at the usual hour (10h30 CET).

For Sunday’s game coach Fernando Vázquez is only having two confirmed casualties and one doubtful player. The main in doubt is striker Javier Arizmendi. During the holidays the striker was in Madrid undergoing new scans and his Sciatica injury is so tricky that the doctors didn’t agree with the diagnosis.

They decided to run out the possibilities one by one and for now opted in a treatment that seems to be working out, because the Madrilenian attacker completed Tuesday’s & Thursday’s sessions without problems. Still, the player hasn’t received the medical okay to play and it’s highly probable that he won’t be available for Sunday.

The men that are already out of the game are long-term cases of midfielder Cezary Wilk (toe) and winger Álvaro Lemos (knee). On this week both men have been training apart, in the case of the Polish player he should be joining the team within the next two weeks.

But the players that have been on the spotlight are Antonio Núñez and Juan Culio; the first signed an extension of contract during Monday, while the Argentine playmaker has been one of the most important players on this season and has an offer to leave, but he has been training with normality, only skipping Monday’s training after a delay in his flight from Madrid (he spent Christmas in Argentina).

Another unusual thing on this week was to see Fabril’s players training with the first team; two weeks ago Fernando Vázquez stated that the youngsters were going to stay at Depor B as the team remained winless, but on Monday it was possible to see centre-back Uxío Marcos, centre midfielder Paulo Teles, striker Dani Iglesias, winger Cañi and playmaker Bicho working with the first team.

By Thursday the lads were back at Depor B, with the exception of Bicho and Teles, duo that worked with the team and that have chances of being picked for the trip to Andalusia (Fernando Vázquez will release the list on Friday).

At Real Jaén, the team is again in the fight to avoid relegation after losing three of the last five games. Coach Manuel Herrero is only having one confirmed casualty for the game: centre midfielder Ócar Quesada.

The Andalusian player is dragging a hamstring injury that sidelined him for the last games against Recreativo de Huelva, RCD Mallorca and SD Ponferradina. Finally, playmaker Mario Martos has been loaned out to Almeria B. The 22-year-old man hasn’t played in the league season, but performed for 30 minutes in the Copa clash against Deportivo.
