MATCHDAY 30: GOALS AND MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

18 Mar 2014
The leaders failed once again and the situation remains trapped in the fight for promotion; what changed was that there were a lot of goals during the weekend; actually it was the fourth matchday with more goals on this Segunda season.

The goals returned to Liga Adelante as, for the first time since December, there were more than 30 goals scored in the eleven games on the matchday. The 31 goals during the weekend mean the fourth highest mark on this season, only behind matchdays  14 (39 goals), 03 (33 goals) and 19 (32 goals).

What didn’t change was to see the leaders failing. And it’s that for the second straight matchday the four first places missed the victory; actually five of the first six spots were unable to win. Leaders SD Eibar could only get a 1-1 draw hosting in-form Hércules CD. Meanwhile, runners-up Deportivo starred the only goalless game of the weekend hosting Barcelona B.

Worse was the luck for Recreativo de Huelva and Sporting Gijón. The Andalusians came from behind in two opportunities, but ended losing 2-3 hosting Real Madrid Castilla and played with ten men for half an hour. The Asturians fell with the same score as they didn’t capitalize the brace of Šćepović during the visit to Real Jaén (3-2).

Neither CD Numancia were able to win after suffering a surprising defeat hosting relegation-troubled AD Alcorcón (0-1). Los Rojillos are one of the two teams that have only lost six games on this season, but curiously four of the losses took place playing at Los Pajaritos.

The big winner on the weekend was UD Las Palmas, first for the refreshing 5-0 score over CE Sabadell CF, their biggest victory on the season, and later because the Canarians were the only side among the first six places that won. Meanwhile, the good run of CD Tenerife ended with a 2-0 defeat visiting RCD Mallorca, and Real Zaragoza was hammered by SD Ponferradina (4-2). It’s the biggest loss for the Aragonians on this season.

The last four places didn’t change, but there were mixed news at the bottom. The victories of SD Ponferradina and AD Alcorcón meant a step towards the salvation for them, but Deportivo Alavés and Girona FC are now getting delayed. Alavés were defeated at home by CD Mirandés (0-2), same outcome than last-place Girona FC after losing hosting Real Murcia (0-1). Finally, Córdoba CF could only get a point hosting CD Lugo (1-1).

It’s a very tight scene at the standings, with only six points separating the promotion zone from the relegation places, which means that any team can pass from fighting to avoid the demotion to dream with the promotion in a stroke of a pen. But it’s also true that that both corners are having slightly advantages. Eibar and Depor have a little difference at the top two positions and, at the same time, Alavés and Girona now new two straight wins to leave the bottom places.
