MATCHDAY 29 & 30: SORROW AT THE BOTTOM

11 Apr 2015
Only Levante UD were able to win a game among the last six places; Getafe CF, Sevilla CF and the three biggest clubs in la liga won both matches. Deportivo are now two points above relegation.

Five teams fully took advantage of the last two matchdays, three of them are the leaders in la liga: FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. The others were Getafe CF and Sevilla CF. Getafe CF had a sensational week beating Depor first (2-1) and later adding a narrow win visiting Elche CF (0-1).

The main news at the top is that Atlético Madrid regained the third spot after beating Córdoba and Real Sociedad (both 2-0 wins), while Valencia CF only got two draws, first 0-0 against Villarreal and later 1-1 at home before Athletic Club, the last one was really painful as the goal came at the last minute in a polemic play.

Meanwhile Real Madrid and FC Barcelona clinched wins without too much opposition, which included an historic 9-1 victory for the Madrilenians hosting Granada CF. The Catalans keep their four-point lead at the top of the standings.

Sevilla CF clinched wins over Athletic Club (2-0) and Levante UD (1-2), and they not only secured the Europa League spot, but reduced the distance with the fourth place to one point. They have now an eleven-point advantage over the sixth place and will probably play in Europe next season.

The sixth place remain in dispute as both Villarreal CF and Malaga CF only rescued a point during the week, RCD Espanyol clinched the surprise of the period with a 0-3 win visiting Villarreal CF, though they remain far from Europe. Neither Athletic Club nor Real Sociedad nor RC Celta seized the moment as they only picked a point in the period.

The situation at the top of the standings:

place team points GF GA
1 Barcelona 74 85 17
2 Real Madrid 70 89 27
3 Atlético 65 57 23
4 Valencia 62 53 23
5 Sevilla 61 55 34
6 Villarreal 50 43 29
7 Malaga 45 32 33
8 Athletic 40 28 36

Poor weeks for the teams trying to survive in la liga; among the last six places Levante UD were the only side that clinched a victory (1-4 at UD Almeria), the rest of teams only rescued a point with UD Almeria losing both games, so the picture hasn’t changed too much.

Deportivo wasted a great opportunity to put distance with the top zone and for now stays only two points above the pit. It isn’t a surprise that two coaches were fired after analyzing the results. Almeria fired JIM, while Depor did the same with Víctor Fernández. The first was replaced with Sergi Barjuán and the second with Víctor Sánchez Del Amo.

The situation at the bottom of the standings:

place team points GF GA
15 Levante 28 28 55
16 Deportivo 27 25 47
18 Almeria 25 24 50
19 Granada 24 20 53
