REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 1 – ATLÉTICO 2 (LIGA)

19 Apr 2015
Bad game by Depor, only the saves by Fabricio kept the team in the game. The Galicians reacted until the end with a goal by Riera. Toché and Sidnei will miss the next game due to suspension.

BEFORE THE GAME
Víctor Sánchez opted in sending an offensive 4-4-2 formation. Fabricio Agosto was the goalie, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Luisinho played on the left, while the central positions were for Albert Lopo and Sidnei Rechel.

Álex Bergantiños and Haris Medunjanin played at midfield, Lucas Pérez attacked from the right wing, Iván Cavaleiro did it from the left, then Toché and Oriol Riera were the centre forwards.

At Atlético Madrid, coach Diego Simeone presented the expected 4-1-4-1 formation. Raúl García performed at the right wing, Arda Turan attacked from the left, while Koke Resurrección and Saúl Ñíguez performed behind Antoine Griezmann.

FIRST HALF
Depor are a weak team, especially mentally, this is the clear picture left after a very poor first half in which Los Blanquiazules conceded two goals before the 25-minute mark. Atlético just seized their specialty, the set-pieces, and later spent the time hanging on before a rival that didn’t create any harm.

The first chance for Atlético was for Griezmann, the Frenchman headed out a corner coming from the left (3’). Just two minutes later the scene was repeated and now the attacker didn’t hesitate. It was a corner that the defence cleared, Giménez headed the ball back into the area and Griezmann scored with a scissor-kick attempt, he was alone at the left corner of the area, but it wasn’t offside as Oriol Riera lasted too much in running out.

Two set-pieces and Atlético were already leading in the score, Depor tried to respond with the same medicine. At minute 10, Medunjanin released a corner-kick and Sidnei headed the ball on target, but visiting goalie Jan Oblak made the save. That was going to be the lonely clear chance for Depor in this half.

With the early advantage Atlético started to play their game: they started to hold on at the back and attacked with criterion with penetrations by both sides. Meanwhile Depor were trying to have the ball, but later they presented the same lack of brightness to create scoring opportunities.

And then Atlético scored again and again through a set-piece. This time it was a throw-in on the right side, the ball was sent directly into the area, Sidnei tried to clear the ball with a header, but instead assisted Griezmann at the far post and the Frenchman scored with a crossed and drilling shot.

There was no response from Depor as the team was emotionally broken. The Galicians were two goals behind with only twenty-five minutes on the clock and were unable to create any harm, meanwhile the Madrilenians were feeling comfortable and had the best opportunities, like the shot of Koke that was an easy catch for Fabricio (29’)

SECOND HALF
Mixed news in the second part; Deportivo lasted in reacting before the passive attitude of Atlético Madrid. The Galicians pushed and showed some of the spirit missed in the first part, but it only completed two shots on target.

For the second part Víctor made a change. Luis Fariña replaced Lucas Pérez. The Galician playmaker suffered an arm injury in the first half, but also had a terrible performance as he only touched the ball twelve times.

Depor began the second half pushing, trying to create something, but it was unable to complete a shot on target, just a header of Juanfran that missed the target after a corner-kick by Medunjanin (59’). Atlético responded with two headers that were saved by Fabricio (61’), the first one was the most spectacular play as the attempt by Raúl García was looking for the bottom left corner and the Canarian made a big save.

Still, Depor showed a new attitude, mainly by two reasons: the passive behavior by Atlético, side that was pretty content with the 0-2 ahead of their European meeting in midweek, and also by the contribution of the full-backs, especially Luisinho, who were now more participative in the game.

So, it was weird to see Luisinho leaving the game replaced by Juan Domínguez. Víctor switched the draw into a 3-5-2, with three men playing as centre-backs and with Cavaleiro acting as a left winger.

Things were so calm that Atlético even started to rest key players as Griezmann and Arda Turan were replaced, but the visiting team continued to be the most dangerous side. At minute 64, substitute Jiménez attempted with a low shot that was saved by Fabricio.

It was necessary to wait until minute 66 to see Depor completing its first shot on target in the game. He was assisted by Cavaleiro, but his attempted was blocked by Oblak. That was only a mirage, because Atlético continued to be the best team, at least the one with the clearest idea to attack.

At minute 73, the Madrilenians had four straight chances to score the third goal, and Fabricio made a great job making three saves in less than twenty seconds before the short-range attempts by Fernando Torres, Raul García and Raul Jimenez, a second attempt by Raul García was cleared to corner-kick by Juan Dominguez.

It seemed that the game was already over, but Depor were able to pull out a goal. Sidnei made the big play on the left wing and released a cross that Oriol Riera met at the box, and the header of the Catalan was a precise effort past Oblak.

Immediately Cuenca replaced Toché and the game turned to be more exciting, Atlético were looking dangerous with their counterattacks, and Lopo was close to tie the game with a downwards header that passed lose to the far post (80’). Depor pressed within the final minutes, but it never created a chance, though the last play was a corner-kick in which Fabricio was trying to head the ball at Atletico’s area.

AFTER THE GAME
Deserved defeat for Deportivo. The Galicians played a poor first half and only reacted until the end of the second. The number of shots on target completed by both teams is a clear demonstration of what happened in the game (10 for Atlético and 2 for Depor). Only Fabricio prevented a biggest loss and the goal by Riera just awoke the dreams of the fans about a miraculous draw.

Depor extended their winless streak to ten games and are now in relegation for the first time since matchday 14 (December 2014). The next game is the visit to Malaga CF (Sunday, 12h00 CET). Toché and Sidnei will miss the game after picking a fifth yellow card on this game, while Lucas is doubtful with an arm injury.
