A DIFFERENT SUMMER WINDOW

14 Aug 2015
The summer market has been different for Deportivo; two weeks are left, but the club has practically closed all the signings and also paid money for the incorporations: €3 million. The highest amount since 2008.

The market window will close its doors in two weeks, in recent years Deportivo were used to wait until the last second as the financial situation was forcing the club to wait for the “last-minute bargains” or to wait for the “unwanted” players at the big teams, just to remember last season, time when Depor made five signings in the last fifteen days in the market, three of them on deadline day (Postiga, Juanfran and Sidnei) and another one when the market was already closed (Diakité).

But this year things have been different, starting with the fact that the squad is practically done at this point. On Wednesday the team announced the signing of Lucas Pérez, the eleventh reinforcement on the season, and now the only pending subject is to sign a centre forward and possibly a winger.

President Tino Fernández explained the situation after the last friendly against Galicia de Mugardos, "Maybe we will be completed with one more signing. Maybe two. I will try to not wait until the last day. One option is to only sign one more striker, the other the striker and a winger. I believe we have enough with this."

It’s clearly a progression as coach Víctor Sánchez has 98% of his team already available. The other pending thing is to define the situation of the players that will not have too many minutes, this is the case of Saúl, Insua and Medunjanin plus academy players Queijeiro and Cardoso.

Last season former coach Víctor Fernández had Juanfran, Postiga and Sidnei on his starting team, at least during the first matchdays, and the trio arrived on deadline day. It means the 27% of the starting team, now Víctor Sánchez can easily make a starting eleven with the opening game to be played in a fortnight.

There’s another singularity in the current market and is related to the money. Depor didn’t pay anything within the last five seasons in terms of transfers, however they already invested around €3 million in the arrivals of Saúl, Oriol Riera and Lucas. The last time Depor invested money was ahead of the season 2008/09, time when the Galician club invested €6.7 million in Colotto, Lafita and Filipe Luis.

At the same time the number of loans have been drastically reduced; as a way of comparison Depor agreed eight loans during the summer window 2014/15, and currently there are only three: Juanfran, Luis Aberto and Fajr, and in the case of Moroccan Fajr he will probably stay two more years as his loan is a particular case with Elche CF.

Tino Fernández was talking of a slight improvement in this regard, “Maybe is exaggerated to be talking of financial health. We prefer to talk of an improvement. Truly we were able to make some things after we were unable to do it within the last years. It’s also true that we tried to bet in experience and there are lesser loans, so the group is more solid. Right now we only have two loans and the rest belong to us with the idea they will stay with us for a long time.”
