Two posts and a draw for Deportivo after a poor first part in which the Galician team did too little before a willful rival. Jonathan and Riera played a good game, but it was Cardoso who changed the meeting after entering the field.

Coach Víctor Sánchez sent the expected lineup with the only novelty of Pedro Mosquera playing for Medunjanin. It was a 4-4-2 draw with Manu Fernández covering the goal, Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’ played at the right side of the defence, the left was for Manuel Pablo, while Róber Pier and Albert Lopo were the centre-backs.

Álex Bergantiños and Mosquera were the centre midfielders, Jonás Gutiérrez attacked from the right wing, Luisinho did it from the left, while Jonathan Rodriguez and Oriol Riera were the centre forwards (both were playing together for the first time).

At CD Mirandés, coach Carlos Terrazas kept the 3-4-3 with a line of three centre-backs and with ex-Athletic Ion Vélez reinforcing midfield. The other references in attack were Marco Sangalli, Álex García and Abdón Prats.

Flat first half by Deportivo. The team played at the pace that Mirandés wanted for 35 minutes, the locals didn’t create too much danger, but it was enough to deserve a goal. Depor only had two chances and both came after the 35-minute mark.

The game had a slow start; Mirandés was pressing up front and Depor were playing combining low throws and short transitions that were ending in crosses that didn’t have any impact. The first goal opportunity in the game came at minute 10, it was an attempt by Álex García after been assisted by Sangalli that was saved by Manu.

The next chance for the locals was a drilling cross in a lateral free-kick that Manu was unable to clear, but the ball went out (19’). Depor weren’t suffering in defence, but neither created any harm. Jonás Gutiérrez was pretty active, but later the crosses of the Galicians didn’t find a receiver.

And then the locals found the goal. A corner-kick from the left ended with Ion Veléz firing from inside the area, Manu deflected the ball as he could, then it went into the path of Abdón Prats, who released a low cross that Álex Ortiz found at the far post to score from close range. Depor protested an offside, but Lopo was standing in the same lane than the attacker.

The goal just made things harder for Depor. The Galicians were playing the game that Mirandés wanted, because it was an exchange of long throws in which the locals were always succeeding. Depor only created danger when Jonathan Rodriguez was falling into the left wing, one of his actions meant the first approximation for the visitors, though the ball was cleared by the defence before it reached the path of Juan Dominguez

Depor did nothing in the first 35 minutes, after reaching this point it had two opportunities. The main one was a pass of Manuel Pablo to Oriol Riera at the edge of the area when the Catalan attacker was backwards the goal, then he turned off and released a strong shot that was deflected by local goalie Raúl Fernández (35’)

The second chance was very similar, with Manuel Pablo assisting Jonathan, whose cross was deflected by the defence. Then the ball reached the path of Juan Dominguez, who ended firing a shot from the edge of the area that went over the crossbar (37’).

Deportivo changed the grey picture for the second part, it had more depth and the entry by Cardoso added the needed accuracy. Lopo fixed the error of the first goal and the team hit the post twice.

Deportivo started the second part with Jonathan firing from the edge of the area, the ball bounced on the ground and it hit the arm of Raúl, luckily for the locals the ball bounced and it hit the crossbar instead of going in (47’).

The action demonstrated that Depor went out for the second half in order to have the ball possession and attack. Mirandés felt comfortable with the situation as they were responding with counterattacks, but they met an immense Róber, always correct at the back zone and with the output of the ball. One of the counterattacks for Mirandés brought their first chance, which was a lateral free-kick that Manu punched and that later Mosquera cleared (53’).

The first modification ordered by Víctor was the entry of Álex Bergantiños replacing Pedro Mosquera. It seemed a change thinking more of la liga, because Mosquera was having a decent game, while Juan Dominguez seemed the one having a flat performance, inconsistent and lacking pace.

Meanwhile, Jonathan and Riera were finally combining and Depor had more depth, but still the Blanquiazul team was failing to create scoring chances.  The second change at Depor meant to switch the system, Cardoso replaced Manuel Pablo and Deportivo started to play with a 3-5-2 figure.

The bet was worthy, because the Portuguese winger was going to add some of the missed aim in attack, the best example the play of the equalizer. Before Jonathan had a made a great solo-play that was cleared by Raúl, then a corner-kick from the left was perfectly released by Cardoso, the ball reached the path of Lopo, who scored with a curved header that was impossible for the keeper.

Faycal Fajr was the last change in the game as he replaced Jonathan Rodriguez, it seemed that Depor were going to have a more passive role, but it was the side having the best two chances before the final whistle.

The first was a drilling shot by Jonás after a corner-kick that was blocked by Raúl (87’), and in the final minute the visitors hit the post again. It was a similar action to the shot of Jonás, the difference was that Cardoso was releasing the drilling attempt, the ball went into the path of Riera, it hit him and turned into a volley that hit later the crossbar.

Two faces by Deportivo, in the first half it was an apathetic team that barely created danger and in the second it found depth and later aim with the entry of Cardoso. Mirandés played their game and deserved the lead in the first part, but was also lucky as Depor hit the woodwork twice in the second. Róber, Jonathan Rodriguez, Jonás and Oriol Riera also had a great game,

The second-leg will be played on next Tuesday at the Riazor (20h30 CET), before Deportivo will close the first round in liga visiting Real Madrid (Santiago Bernabeú stadium, Saturday, 20h30 CET).
