Deeper problems for a Deportivo that continue sinking. The team had a solid start, but it simply failed to react after allowing the first goal. The nightmare continues.

Víctor Sánchez presented the expected 4-4-2 figure with the only novelty of Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’ performing at the right side of the defence. The rest of the defence had Manu Fernández covering the goal, Fernando Navarro performing on the left side, while the centre-backs were Sidnei Rechel and Alejandro Arribas.

Pedro Mosquera and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Fede Cartabia attacked from the right wing, Fayçal Fajr did it from the left, while Luis Alberto and Lucas Pérez were the centre forwards.

At Getafe CF, coach Juan Esnáider opted in a 4-2-3-1 draw, with Stefan Šćepović on the bench as ex-Villarreal Moi Gómez was the playmaker. Pedro León, Pablo Sarabia and Álvaro Vázquez were the references in attack.

Promising first part for Depor, but the same story: the team had the ball and conceded a goal in the only shot on target allowed by the team during this part. The Galicians deserved much more, but paid a high price for not creating too many chances and also for defending poorly the counterattack.

The game started with Deportivo pushing up front, Luis Alberto had the first approximation with a short cross that was caught by visiting goalie Vicente Guaita (2’). Getafe were trying to seize the counterattack, but Deportivo were well planted and made a couple of interceptions that avoided chances for the visitors.

Luis Alberto also had the first big chance in the game, he collected the ball at the edge of the area and released a low shot that was looking for the bottom left corner, but Guaita made a great save clearing the ball to corner-kick (6’).

At minute 12, Cartabia made a great play on the left wing eluding two rivals, but didn’t find any partner to combine when he tried to enter the area. The Argentine and Luis Alberto were the most active players in a team that was looking much more motivated than Getafe, side that started the game penultimate at the standings.

Lucas had his first chance in the game at minute 20, it was a direct free-kick in which his low shot passed close to the far post.  Depor continued having the control over the game, but wasn’t creating the goal chances to score the first goal.

Little by little Getafe started to improve thanks to the counterattacks led by Pedro León. The midfielders were now losing the ball and the defence was unable to anticipate the rival’s passes as it did within the first minutes, so the team started to suffer.

Getafe’s first chance was a counterattack after a free-kick for Depor in which Pedro León was unable to release a proper cross for Medrán (28’). In the next play Cartabia appeared again and his low shot missed the far post. At minute 30, Sarabia was close to score with a drilling shot that went out.

The last ten minutes witnessed a Depor that was now clueless, and it was then that the goal arrived. The Galicians were attacking with Luis Alberto trying to find Lucas inside the area, the ball was cleared and in the counterattack, after four visiting players touched the ball, Sarabia assisted Pedro León, who scored with a low shot past Manu. There was no reaction from Depor after the goal and the game reached the pause.

From bad to worse. Depor were too desperate and to make things worse it played with ten men for thirty minutes. The team never gave the sense of been able to tie the actions and ended allowing a new goal in a corner-kick.

Deportivo were nervous at the start of the second half, the team was controlling the game, but it was missing the same fluency of the first part. The first chance for the locals was a direct free-kick of Cartabia that was deflected by Guaita (50’), who was the best player at the visiting side.

The danger was only sensed in set-pieces, so Depor had its next chances to score after three corner-kicks. In one of them Mosquera missed the target (52’). Then Cartabia started to appear again. At minute 58, the Argentine eluded two rivals inside the area and his final shot was blocked by Guaita, two minutes later he fired from the edge of the area and again Getafe’s keeper avoided the goal, this time clearing the danger to corner. The Argentine was the best man at the local team, but it wasn’t enough to score a goal.

In the middle of both chances for Cartabia, Víctor made the first two changes and Juanfran and Cani entered for Laure and Fajr. And only three minutes later Depor were reduced to ten men as Borges was sent off for a second yellow card after arriving late to a play at midfield.

Substitute Šćepović should have scored the second at minute 68, but his strong shot went directly into the path of Manu. If Depor were already having problems to create chances having eleven men, it was worse with ten. The desperation on the pitch was followed by whistles at the stands before the impotence of a team that never reacted.

The shame at the stands was worse when the second goal arrived. And it was during a corner-kick, one of the headaches on the season, Pedro León released a lot shot from the left and nobody reacted until Carlos Vigaray made a small deflection at the near post sending the ball to the bottom corner of Manu. Only then Víctor made the third change with Oriol Riera replacing Navarro.

The nightmare was already completed and Getafe CF could have even scored a third goal, this after Stefan Šćepović starred a pin-ball play that hit both posts and later went out (90+2’). The game ended with more whistles from the fans.

New blow for Depor’s aspirations of staying at Primera. The team had a good start, but later lost the impulse as the goals weren’t arriving. Cartabia was the best man, but it wasn’t enough for a team that played with ten men for thirty minutes after Celso Borges was sent off.

The Central American midfielder and Fernando Navarro, who picked the fifth yellow card on the season, will miss the next game due to suspension: the visit to Villarreal CF (El Madrigal, Sunday, 17h00 CET)
