Deportivo confirmed that striker Oriol Riera will play loaned at CA Osasuna during the season 2016/17. The Catalan attacker had to reduce his wages in order to complete the operation.

The club announced on Thursday that Oriol Riera will play loaned at CA Osasuna ahead of the campaign 2016/17. The operation was negotiated for days and was about to be completed at the beginning of the week, but it got complicated in Wednesday as Depor weren’t accepting to only pay the 50% of the player’s wages.

The solution was to see the player reducing his wages, so by Thursday the operation was made despite Riera trained with Depor’s team early in the morning. There’s a clause in the contract that doesn’t allow the striker to face Deportivo during this season.

Riera has played two seasons at Depor and the true is that he hasn’t convinced the fans. For the campaign 2014/15, he arrived loaned from Wigan Athletic during the winter window and barely had an impact in the results. After debuting against Levante UD on matchday 18, he played in all the 19 matches of the second round (only Fabricio did the same). The style of Depor changed with him on board, because he helped a lot in the aerial game and to create secondary plays. The problem is that he failed too much inside the area, just to remember the incredible opportunity that he missed at the Riazor in the derby against RC Celta, goal that would have meant the equalizer (Depor lost 0-2 in the end).

He managed to score foul goals, and only one of those goals meant a point for Depor (1-1 Vs. Malaga CF). Still, he was very happy with this stage and, after a conversation with president Tino Fernández the day of the last game against FC Barcelona, he was able to return after Wigan accepted to transfer the player to Depor. The Galicians paid €700,000 and the striker signed a three-year contract with the Blanquiazul outfit.

Last season he was the victim of the fact that both Lucas and Luis Alberto were the perfect couple in attack. He was pushed to a secondary role and ended to be the player with more entries coming out from the bench (15). He neither gave motives to think that he deserved more minutes, because the Catalan didn’t convince too much with his performances as he wasn’t scoring goals. He only scored twice and one of those goals was the only one netted by a substitute during the season (At Sevilla, April 17).

Riera is the eighth player under contract that leaves Depor during the summer. Pablo Insua (Leganés), Juan Dominguez (Mallorca), Róber (Levante) and Bicho (Racing de Ferrol) were loaned, Miguel Cardoso and Luis Fernández rescinded their contracts, while Manuel Pablo retired.
