The 13th and final signing of Deportivo is Joselu; the Galician/German striker arrived almost at the deadline and will play loaned at Depor during the season 2016/17.

José Luis Sanmartín ‘Joselu’ is the last signing of Deportivo ahead of the season 2016/17. The club attempted this signing for days after the departure of Lucas, but it was until 11PM that a deal was reached and only after the club failed to sign Álvaro Vázquez. He will play loaned at Depor for one season. There’s no buyout option over the striker.

Joselu is a product of Celta’s youth system (he scored a few goals at Abegondo playing against Depor’s teams); been 18 he made 26 appearances when Los Celestes were at Segunda and scored four goals; then he moved to Real Madrid. He performed for the B squad was part of a powerful team that impressed at Segunda B and that had members like Juanfran Moreno, Sarabia or Morata.

He and Morata were the top-scorers during the season 2010/11 (14 goals each one) and thus earned the chance to debut at the elite. It is a curious story as the Galician striker has only played six minutes at Primera, but it was enough to score a goal. He came as a substitute for Karim Benzema in the home game against UD Almería and he netted the last goal in the 8-1 win of his team.

Castilla missed the promotion that year, but it reached the Segunda División one year later with a new powerful version led by Morata, Joselu and Jese. Joselu was the top scorer netting 19 goals in 33 matches. But, as it happens with several prospects at Real Madrid, he decided that the best was to leave and ended signing for German club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in a deal that meant €6 million.

He only needed two games to score his first goal at the Bundesliga, but in the end he only scored 5 goals in 25 presentations, his team escaped the relegation by only one point and he was loaned to Eintracht Frankfurt for the season 2013/14. Joselu improved after a hard adaptation and ended scoring 14 goals in 33 appearances as The Eagles finished at 13th position reaching the knock-out stages of the UEFA Europa League.

A new transfer was lived one year later as the German/Galician player was transferred to Hannover 96 on a four-year deal for a fee of €5 million. His numbers didn’t improve too much there after netting 8 goals in 30 league appearances; then, and for the fourth straight season, he was moved to a new team during the summer.

This time his destiny was the Premier League and Stoke City, club that paid around €5 million for his services. Once again he had a good start as, during his debut on August 15 facing Totteham Hotspurs, he earned a penalty that helped to clinch a 2-2 draw after been down 0-2. And once again he had a slow career after a promising debut as he was only able to score 4 goals in 22 Premier League appearances. After only one year coach Mark Hughes no longer wanted him and the player started to search for an exit. Depor attempted his signing after the exit of Lucas, but Stoke wanted €8 million and the option was retaken until deadline day.

Joselu is the 13th and final signing of Deportivo ahead of the campaign 2016/17. Previously the club signed goalkeepers Przemysław Tytoń and Rubén Martínez, right-back Juanfran Moreno, centre-back Raúl Albentosa, wingers Bruno Gama and Emre Çolak, centre midfielders Fayçal Fajr and Guilherme, playmaker Carles Gil, plus attackers Borja Valle, Marlos Moreno and Florin Andone.
