MATCHDAY 13: GOALS AND SORROW AT THE BOTTOM

01 Dec 2016
Comfortable lead for Real Madrid in la liga, while the bottom clubs have barely won within the last six matchdays. It was the second matchday with more goals on this campaign.

35 goals were scored in matchday 13, it’s the second highest number on this season after the 44 that were netted in matchday 08. It was possible after the half of the twenty clubs in the league scored two or more goals.

The big winner was Real Madrid; Los Blancos suffered as they only got a 2-1 win hosting relegation-troubled Sporting Gijón with the Asturians missing a penalty at the end of the game, but it is the sixth straight success for the Madrilenians and they extended their lead at the top to six points.

It was also possible after FC Barcelona were only able to get a 1-1 draw visiting Real Sociedad, and the Catalans were lucky as the Basques suffered a disallowed goal that was legal and that would have left the three points in San Sebastián. Real Sociedad are now fifth after adding 13 of the last 15 points in dispute.

Sevilla CF kept the third place after a dramatic 2-1 win over Valencia CF with Sergio Rico making a key save at the last second. Villarreal CF lost the fourth place as they were surprised at home by Deportivo Alavés (0-2), it was their first lost at El Madrigal during this season.

The fourth spot is now for Atlético Madrid as they came back strongly with a 0-3 win visiting CA Osasuna. SD Eibar clinched a 3-1 win over Real Betis after spending the major part of the game with one more player, they are now only one point away from the European seats. UD Las Palmas beat Athletic Club (3-1) and both sides remain in mid-table, while RCD Espanyol did the same hosting CD Leganés (3-0) and the Catalans are now just only four points behind the sixth place.

The situation at the top of the standings:

place team points GF GA
1 Real Madrid 33 36 11
2 Barcelona 27 33 14
3 Sevilla 27 24 18
4 Atlético 24 28 11
5 Real Sociedad 23 22 14
6 Villarreal 22 19 10
7 Eibar 21 20 16
8 Athletic 20 27 16

The sorrow is coming at the bottom of the standings, because combined the last five clubs have only won two games within the last six matchdays. Valencia CF won once and later suffered three defeats in five games. Depor have lost four of the last six games, and in this matchday they again leaked a goal in the stoppage time to end losing 4-3 at Málaga CF, just when they were able to pass from a 3-1 into a 3-3 in what was the craziest game of the weekend.

The situation is worse for the last three places. Both Sporting Gijón and CA Osasuna have lost three times in a row, while Granada CF remain winless. In this matchday the Andalusians were defeated visiting RC Celta (3-1).

MATCHDAY 14: EL CLASICO
The attention will be focused in the visit of Real Madrid to FC Barcelona, the Catalans cannot drop more points and this is a vital battle in the quest for the title due to the current difference between both sides.
