New wasted opportunity to secure the permanence. Deportivo only reacted in the second half, but it was too late as RCD Espanyol had already scored twice.

In the end Ignacio Monsalve was on the bench, and the other Fabril’s player on the roster, Edu Expósito, was a starter. Álex Bergantiños was the chosen one in order to play at the centre of the defence as Albentosa and Sidnei were unavailable.

The draw was a 4-2-3-1 figure. German Lux was the starting goalie, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Fernando Navarro performed on the left, then Alejandro Arribas joined Álex at the centre. Guilherme was playing alongside Expósito at midfield, Emre Çolak was placed at the right wing, Celso Borges was the playmaker, Ola John attacked from the left wing and Florin Andone was the centre forward.

At RCD Espanyol, coach Quique Sánchez Flores presented the expected 4-4-2 figure with the only novelty that Léo Baptistão was a starter leaving Caicedo on the bench. The other references in attack were Pablo Piatti and Gerard Moreno

Terrible first half for Deportivo, the team committed too many errors before a passive but effective rival that seized the cracks at the back zone to net twice. The Galicians only reacted in the final stretch, but they only hit the post.

Deportivo started nervous, with problems at the back zone and with Álex Bergantiños forced the clear the ball in the first approximation of the visiting side (1’). This was only a repetition of the recent problems at the start of the games, though in this opportunity it didn’t cost a goal.

The Galicians had a double approximation at minute 5, in both the ball was cleared by the defence after the crosses from Juanfran. Two minutes later Andone got the ball at the right wing in a counterattack action, but his final shot missed the target.

Deportivo started to grow in the game and Ola John had the next opportunity, it was a counterattack in which the Dutchman ran from midfield and his low shot was blocked by visiting goalie Diego López (10’).

And then it came the first goal from RCD Espanyol, it was a big error by Alejandro Arribas. He was alone at the back zone and tried to clear the danger, but he couldn’t strike the ball, Léo Baptistão seized the error and ran towards Lux to score through a low shot. The Galicians felt the hit and were unable to react in the next minutes.  Borges, Çolak and Álex Bergantiños weren’t feeling comfortable and it was noticed.

RCD Espanyol were close to seize a new error, this time by Álex Bergantiños, but the low shot by Gerard Moreno went out (19’).  The next chance for Deportivo came until minute 25, Çolak got the ball at the left wing, he ran towards the centre and his low shot was blocked by Diego López.

Then it came the second goal from Espanyol, it was a counterattack with a long pass that found Pablo Piatti alone enough at the left wing, then he ran towards the area and his drilling cross found Gerard Moreno, who was alone enough to score from the penalty spot.

The Riazor had enough and now the whistles were the constant in the game. Depor was a broken team, with Borges lost on the playmaking function, while neither Çolak nor Ola John were adding depth on the sides.

At least Deportivo reacted in the final minutes, first Borges hit the post after collecting the ball inside the area (35’), one minute later a shot by Ola John was saved by Diego López, and then a long distance shot by Edu Expósito missed the target (38’). Late reaction that didn’t find the reward of a goal.

Deportivo were much better but it only scored one goal. The Galicians harassed a rival that, despite the pressure, felt comfortable with the situation. Arribas hit the crossbar in the best chance to tie the match

Carles Gil replaced Edu Expósito at the start of the half. The 20-year-old midfielder had a decent performance in the first part, but now Depor needed goals and it found the first just seconds after the kick-off.

Ola John made the play on the left wing, he eluded two rivals and ended drilling the ball into the box, Florin Andone was there to end crossing Diego López. It’s his tenth goal on the season. And then Depor were close to net the equalizer in a secondary play in a corner-kick, but the header of Arribas hit the crossbar (50’).

The locals were a different team now, it was putting a high pressure and now RCD Espanyol were asphyxiated in the output of the ball. Andone had the next chance after a new assist by Ola John, but this time Diego López made the save (53’).  Depor were pushing for the equalizer and RCD Espanyol were having some chances in the counterattack, so the game turned to be entertaining.

At minute 65, Çolak collected the ball at the edge of the area in a rebound, but his shot went over the crossbar. Depor started to fade away with the passage of the minutes, the pressure wasn’t as high as in the beginning of the half and RCD Espanyol were having longer ball possessions.

Marlos Moreno was the second substitution as Ola John was dragging muscle problems. The Dutchman was the best player at the local team, while the Colombian entered the field and added some freshness, though it wasn’t enough to find the second goal. The final change was the entry of Fayçal Fajr for Çolak

Depor had three chances within the final ten minutes. First a lateral free-kick by Fajr was close to end in an own goal (81’), then Andone headed wide a cross from the left (87’). The final chance was a direct free-kick by Fajr that was blocked by Diego López (90+1’)

New frustration for Deportivo. The team was soulless in the first part, it reacted in the final stretch and pushed in the final half, but it was unable to overcome a two-goal disadvantage. Depor had the double of chances than RCD Espanyol, but it lost for its lack of punch and softness in defence.

Depor remain in danger with two matchdays to go. CD Leganés play on Monday and difference with the pit is now of five points after the victory of Sporting Gijón. The Galicians need a victory in the visit to Villarreal CF (Sunday 20h00 CET) or two draws within the last two games, another situation that would pave the way to salvation is a combination of results by Sporting Gijón and CD Leganés.
