It's a secret that everybody knows. Deportivo is searching for a new striker in order to end the negative mark of 420 minutes without goals. Several names have been mentioned during the last month, but all appoints that the desired reinforcement is coming from Argentina, at least it's what Depor Sport is affirming. The last candidate added to the list is Mauro Z??rate, the pichichi in Argentina.

It's clear that Deportivo is searching for a new striker in the market. The team has only scored eleven goals in sixteen matches, a number that means the second worst record in la liga (the worst one is Real Sociedad with 10). The club's officials have admitted in private conversations that they are searching for the right candidate. Coach Caparr??s didn't want to talk about this issue, but he has affirmed that if the club wants to sign a new striker, it should be a player according to the profile of the project: young, promising and especially affordable.

The Spanish media have wrote several names of strikers during the last two months. The main ones are Braulio (21), Joseba Llorente (27), Alberto Bueno (18), 'Chelito' Delgado (25) and Salva (31). But the club affirmed in its own newspaper (Depor Sport) that the main candidates for the job are currently in Argentina. The following is the list of prospects presented by Depor Sport:

1- Mariano Pavone: (24) He has been described as a forward that dominates the aerial game and that possess the quality to make shots from long-distance. Pavone has great experience in Argentina and has been with Estudiantes de La Plata during the last three tournaments. He scored 16 goals in Torneo Clasura 2005 and was near to breaking the record of Mart?n Palermo for a single tournament (20 goals in 19 matches). But the biggest achievement for Pavone was the wining goal that he scored against Boca Juniors in the past week, a goal that gave the title to Estudiantes for the Torneo Apertura 2006. During the last week, his name has been related with Inter Milan, but an official in Estudiantes said that he will only leave the squad if someone presents a good offer, like the one made by Real Madrid for G??nzalo Higua?n (€19 million)

2- Gonzalo Bergessio (22). He has been described as a powerful striker with a good physical condition. This young forward was playing in Platense (second division) at the beginning of the year 2005, but then he was signed by Instituto de C??rdoba and made the big jump to Primera. He played 35 games with the squad and scored six goals. Although his mark of goals wasn't impressive, the youngster called the attention of other clubs like Racing and San Lorenzo. After Instituto got relegated, Bergessio was transferred to Racing Club for the torneo Apertura 2006, he ended the tournament with six goals scored in 13 matches.

3- Marco Gast??n Rub?n (20): This youngster impressed with Rosario Central during the Torneo Apertura 2006 (7 goals in 15 matches). His best quality is the capacity to elude the rivals. It has been speculated that Liverpool and Bordeaux were chasing him. And during the last days, it was known that Independiente and River Plate are also interested in his signing. Sportpaper Ol? in Argentina has informed that Rosario Central is asking US$ 5 million for him (€3.8 million).

4- Oscar Cardozo (23): He is from Paraguay and played the torneo Apertura 2006 with Newell's Old Boys. He was the best foreign scorer in the competition (11 goals) and ended third in the general list (only surpassed by Z??rate and Palacio). He arrived to Newell's six months ago, but he has already showed his great qualities. One of his main characteristics is the capacity to execute the free-kicks. River Plate was interested in this striker, but they refused to chase him after Newell's asked US$ 10 million for his transfer (€7.6 million).

5- Mauro Z??rate (19) The last name added to the list. He belongs to V?lez Sarfield and is one of the most promising young talents in Argentina. He won the pichichi trophy alongside Rodrigo Palacio thanks to his 12 goals scored in 19 matches. An impressive mark taking in mind that V?lez only scored 25 goals in the Torneo Apertura 2006. Z??rate has been described as a fast and skilful player. According to the Spanish sportpaper Marca, the Argentinean was offered to Celta, but the Galician neighbour isn't interested since V?lez is asking €8 million for the transfer.
