A large squad and two budgets, those are the main problems that sporting director Richard Barral is facing at the moment of planning the squad for the season 2017/18.

The fans are expecting for a reaction after the poor performance of the previous season, but the planning for the new campaign hasn’t been easy and is leaving more doubts. Beyond the usual problems to sign players in the market, sporting director Richard Barral is meeting two major obstacles.

The first one is the current large squad at Deportivo, despite only making three signings so far, the first team is already composed by 26 players, and with the intention of reducing the squad to 22 players, the club must open the door to four men plus finding space for the players that could be signed (three or four additions).

President Tino Fernández promised quality above quantity, still the technical secretariat need to release the players that don’t count, at the same time it has to handle the unexpected exits of players that count, but that could leave due to the interest of other clubs, like the case of Pablo Insua and Sidnei Rechel.

A second problem is the situation with the budget, the problems with the debt are leaving Depor with one of the lowest salary caps at Primera División, the club is currently trying to negotiate with the banks the debt with the Tax Agency, something that will increase the deadlines and therefore will allow a better budget for the signings.

But it isn’t clear if that negotiation will be ready before the new season begins, so the club is working with two budgets, something that just ad complexity to the situation in the transfer market. Thus the pre-season will start in one week with Deportivo having many doubts about the composition of the team for the new season.
