INSUA LEAVES DEPORTIVO

01 Jul 2017
Pablo Insua has been transferred to FC Schalke 04. The German side is paying €3.5 million plus incentives and the player signs a four-year deal.

Just hours after announcing the deal to pay the debt, the club announced that centre-back Pablo Insua has been transferred to FC Schalke 04. The reason why this transfer was delayed until this point is that any transfer made before paying the privileged debt with the Tax Agency was automatically meaning to discount the 25%, now that the privileged debt is paid the club is collecting the 100% of any sell operation. So, the agreement was ready since the weekend, but was sealed until Thursday.

The centre-back was transferred for €3.5 million plus incentives, which could raise the amount of the operation to €4 million. Also, the club is getting a certain percentage of a future sell plus a rebuy option, the details of these last options weren’t revealed. He is signing a four-year deal with the German side.

Insua arrived to Deportivo in 2005 coming from SD Compostela; he was only eleven and slowly climbed from the Infantil B squad to the Cadete B team. He joined a group of talented players that were going to climb until reaching Fabril squad, among them Uxío Marcos, another promising centre-back that was going to be his partner in many opportunities. Insua was always promoted to the upper team at the end of the seasons and even ended climbing one more step at the end of the campaigns. For this reason, he got used to play with older players.

His biggest jump came for the season 2010/11; he was supposed to be promoted to Juvenil A while Uxío was going to perform for Depor B, but in the end it was the opposite, because Insua spent more time at Fabril and only played five games with Juvenil A. The Arzua-born defender made the pre-season stage and convinced coach Tito Ramallo, which was surprising as Uxío, who’s nine months older, was supposed to pick up the spot. On August 29, 2010, Insua debuted with Fabril during the opening matchday at Segunda B (2-2 Vs. CD Lugo). He was only 16, so Insua turned to be the youngest debutant at the team during the era with former coach Tito Ramallo, who stayed as the manager of the B squad during 11 years.

Insua spent three seasons playing for Depor B, two at Tercera and one at Segunda B. He completed 96 liga appearances with the B squad scoring five goals and providing one assist. In the first two years he didn’t have options at the first team of Deportivo, mainly as the position of centre-back was well covered with men like Colotto, Ze Castro and Lopo. Still, he called the attention of foreign clubs like Manchester City FC, but Deportivo moved quickly and in 2010 the Galician prospect signed a four-year contract that had the option of been extended for three more seasons in case of been promoted to the first team.

The season 2012/13 was special to him because, despite the relegation of the first team to Segunda and that Fabril lost the promotion race to Segunda B in the last game, he was able to debut at Primera División and also in Copa Del Rey. He debuted on November 25, 2012 as Depor were visiting Athletic Bilbao (1-1). It was two months before he turned 19. The centre-back played other two games with the first team, always with Depor performing on the road. It was because Depor were hit hard by the injuries, and the curious thing is that his three appearances were meetings at historic stadiums: San Mamés (Athletic Bilbao), Camp Nou (FC Barcelona) and the Vicente Calderón (Atlético Madrid).

Depor were playing at Segunda for the season 2013/14 and coach Fernando Vázquez decided that he was going to be promoted on a permanent basis to the first squad. Ze Castro and Aythami Artiles left the club; at the same time the continuities of Kaká and Marchena were closed, now Insua was going to compete before these two veterans in order to get a starting spot at the centre of the defense. He began the season as a normal starter as Marchena arrived until the last day of the transfer window. The former academy player was a fixed starter at the centre of the defense and a reference at the team, to the point that Fernando Vázquez had to seat experienced Marchena in order to allow his progression. Secure, fast and constantly well-positioned in the field, many analysts believe he was the best centre-back at Liga Adelante (he was included in the ideal team of the LFP). He played in 39 of the 42 liga meetings, being the player with more interceptions (92) and clearances (199).

The club recognized what they had and at the end of March of 2004 they signed a contract extension lasting until 2018. However, he gave a step backwards for the season 2014/15. After been one of the most important players in the promotion to Primera, he was now the third choice at the centre of the defence behind Sidnei and Lopo. He only made seventeen appearances in liga and paid the price for it, because Insua didn’t look good in the games in which he played. Since the team was lacking centre-backs at the start of the season he begun the tournament as a starter, he was one of the changes introduced after matchday 07, but quickly Víctor Fernández dropped him from the starting formation and never regained that status with Víctor Sánchez.

Since that point he was never going to have a new opportunity at Depor, he was loaned in consecutive seasons to CD Leganés, firstly in a successful campaign that was going to allow the Madrilenians to earn the promotion at Segunda División (2015/16), and later completed a solid campaign at the elite (2016/17). CD Leganés were interested in their signing, but the offer from FC Schalke 04 prevailed.
