Deportivo announced on Friday the signing of Swiss international Fabian Schär. The centre-back is signing a four-year deal after Depor paid an undisclosed fee to 1899 Hoffenheim

It was a surprise, a lot has been said about the possible exit of Sidnei and it was known that Deportivo were looking for prospects, but no one anticipated the arrival of Fabian Lukas Schär, a 25-year-old centre-back that was considered as an alternative by FC Barcelona, Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC.

The club announced that he is signing a four-year deal after paying an undisclosed fee (sources in Germany said that €2 million) to Bundesliga side 1899 Hoffenheim. He still has to complete the medicals and should join the trainings on next week. Pepe Mel already announced that this signing is made in the anticipation of not repeating Lucas’ case, which means that he should be considered as the substitute of Sidnei, who is pretended among other clubs by Sevilla CF.

Schär is a product of the academy at Swiss FC Wil, in 2012 he was transferred to FC Basel, club where he was going to win six national titles plus reaching the semifinals in the UEFA Europa League facing Chelsea FC (they lost 2-5 in the aggregate score)

On 4 June 2015, Schär signed for Bundesliga side 1899 Hoffenheim in an operation that cost €5.59 million. He played 24 league games in his first Bundesliga season and was linked with a move to FC Barcelona, Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC, but he stayed only to reduce his participation to seven games in the season 2016/17 (six in the Bundesliga and one on the Cup).

The reason why he wasn’t playing was tactical as coach Julian Nagelsmann preferred other options. More prolific is his career with Switzerland national squad. Schär was a youth international having played at under-20 and under-21 level. He was selected to represent Switzerland in the men's football tournament at the 2012 Summer Olympics, and later played the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He has scored seven times with the national team.

Schär is the seventh signing of Deportivo for the campaign 2017/18. Previously the club secured the arrival of Argentine playmaker Fede Cartabia, centre midfielders Guilherme dos Santos and Fede Valverde, right-back Gerard Valentín, playmaker Carles Gil plus winger Zakaria Bakkali.
