New defeat in liga, Depor came back from a 0-2 disadvantage to end conceding two more goals within the final ten minutes. Lucas and Valverde had their first minutes on the season.

Coach Pepe Mel chose the expected 4-4-2 formation for the game, Bruno Gama and Adrian were the novelties compared to the previous game against Levante UD. Przemysław Tytoń was the starting goalie, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Luisinho played on the left, then Fabian Schär and Sidnei Rechel were the centre-backs.

Pedro Mosquera and Guilherme Dos Santos were the centre midfielders, Bruno Gama performed on the right wing, Fede Cartabia did it on the left flank, finally Adrián López and Florin Andone were the attackers.

At Real Sociedad, coach Eusebio Sacristán surprised as he allowed the appearance of new signing Adnan Januzaj as a starter. The Belgian was claiming the spot of Sergio Canales. The rest was the expected 4-3-3 lineup with William José and Juanmi Jiménez as the main references in attack.

Disastrous start with Depor allowing two goals in four minutes, Real Sociedad had things under control until Adrián scored, then the tide changed and the Basques were lucky to not allow a goal within the last ten minutes before the strong pressure from the Galicians.

The game started with a big shock as Real Sociedad scored twice in a matter of two minutes. In the first goal, Xabi Prieto released a volley from the left, Juanmi came from behind to beat the offside trap and cross Tytoń.

Depor didn’t react and Juanmi was close to score again, and the second goal came in the resulting corner-kick. Bruno Gama didn’t clear properly the ball and it reached the path of Illarramendi, who scored with a low shot into the low right-corner of Tytoń.

The locals were trailing early in the game and it conditioned the actions, because the Galicians were in a hurry and each time they attacked, the Basques were responding with quick attacks. The first approximation for Deportivo was a secondary action in a corner-kick, the shot from Juanfran hit a rival and ended in the arms of visiting goalie Rulli (7’).

The two-goal advantage gave plenty of confidence to Real Sociedad. The visiting side had things under control and attacked at will, while Deportivo were having big problems to move the ball on the pitch and therefore lacked depth to create scoring opportunities.

And then the game changed as Depor scored its first goal. Fabian Schär released an accurate pass from midfield, the ball went into the path of Adrián López on the left side of the area, the Asturian didn’t allow the ball to rebound on the ground and instead released an impressive crossed shot past Rulli.

Depor growth in the game thanks to the moves of Adrián, the Asturian left good solo-moves, not enough to create clear goal opportunities, but at least it took the ball off from Real Sociedad, side that no longer was releasing their dangerous counterattacks.

The first half ended with an avalanche over Real Sociedad, countless crosses and plays that weren’t ended inside the box just because the locals didn’t find the ball at the precise moment, the wave was crowned by the last attack in the half: a corner-kick action in which Andone headed the ball on target, but Rulli got it (45+1’).

Florin Andone tied the game and it seemed the victory was near, but Real Sociedad reacted and scored again consecutive goals to sunk a Deportivo in which the substitutions eliminated the impulse of the first minutes.

The final part started with an early substitution, Lucas Pérez replaced Bruno Gama. And only a few seconds later Deportivo tied the game. Juanfran rescued the ball on the right wing, then he eluded two rivals to end releasing a high cross, Adrián headed the ball downwards at the far post and turned into a perfect assist as Andone came from behind to score from the box.

Real Sociedad tried to react after wasting the two-goal lead and Juanmi was close to score through a short-distance shot that was saved by Schär (53’), three minutes later Iñigo Martinez missed the target after collecting a high cross from the left.

Lucas appeared for the first time at minute 57, it was a lateral free-kick in which his attempt was blocked by Rulli (57’). One minute later, Andone attempted an acrobatic shot after a cross from Juanfran and he missed the target.

The second substitution at Depor was the debut of Fede Valverde replacing Fede Cartabia. The team started to lose the impulse and Real Sociedad turned to be the most dangerous side on the pitch, so Mel introduced a new change and Bakkali replaced Andone.

Neither the third change had an impact for Depor and Real Sociedad still had the game under control. Substitutes Canales and Diego Vela brought fresh air and the Basques were having the ball possession.

And the Basques got the reward for their efforts, it was a corner-kick in which their third substitution in the game, Diego Llorente, found the ball inside the box, Juanfran made a deflection and then the defender made a new small deflection to end crossing a static Tytoń.

Three minutes later Real Sociedad secured the victory with the fourth goal. It was a lateral free-kick action which Illarramendi collected the ball at the edge of the area and, as he wasn’t facing any mark, he ended releasing a low shot that Tytoń deflected, but still the ball went in. The game ended with Lucas hitting the woodwork as he took a corner-kick at the right (90+1’).

In Spain, there’s a phrase that perfectly describes the meeting: “To row to end dying on the shore”. And that’s what happened to Depor, side that came from a 0-2 disadvantage to end losing 2-4 after allowing two goals within the final ten minutes.  The changes disorganized the team, while the substitutions at Real Sociedad ended making the difference.

The Blanquiazul team has now allowed nine goals in three games and continues to be winless. The next game for Deportivo is the visit to Real Betis (Benito Villamarín, Saturday, 18h30 CET)
