Deportivo rescued a point and left the relegation zone. The Galicians were losing in the major part of the game, but never surrendered before a rival that missed ideas.

Coach Cristóbal Parralo was willing to switch the draw into a 4-4-2, but the last-minute casualty of Lucas Pérez forced him to instead use a 4-3-3 draw. Pedro Mosquera was the novelty as he completed the trident at midfield.

Rubén Martínez was the starting goalie, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Luisinho played on the left. Raúl Albentosa and Sidnei Rechel were the centre-backs. The trivote at midfield was composed by Guilherme, Celso Borges and Mosquera. Carles Gil attacked from the right wing, Adrián López did it from the left and Florin Andone was the centre forward.

At Villarreal CF, Javi Calleja presented the expected 4-3-1-2 formation. Carlos Bacca and recent addition Enes Ünal were starters in attack, with academy player Daniel Raba coming from behind.

It was a good first half by Deportivo, serious with the ball and without major mistakes at the back zone, but with the usual luck. The Galicians didn't seize their opportunities, while Villarreal CF took advantage one of their few chances through newcomer Ünal.

Slow start in the game, Villarreal CF had the ball, but was lacking depth at the moment of facing Depor’s defence. The Galicians had a couple of chances to steal the ball in attack, but they made bad decisions at the moment of ending the plays, the main one a volley of Juanfran that missed the target (7’).

At minute 11, a combination between Andone and Carles Gil ended with a cross from Juanfran, who released a low cross that Borges didn’t collect inside the area. The locals seemed too passive, so Depor started to gain control of the actions.

At minute 17, Albentosa could have scored for the Galicians. Adrián and Carles Gil made the play on the left wing and assisted the centre-back, who missed the target firing from the left corner of the box.

The locals had the ball possession in the half (at some point the percentage was 64%), but they didn’t find clarity in attack, their first shot came until minute 26. Carlos Bacca collected the ball at the edge of the area, he attempted a low volley hot that was cleared by Rubén Martínez.

And just when Depor seemed better, Villareal scored their goal. It was quick play with Bacca finding the ball at the left side of the area, then he drilled the ball into the centre and Enes Ünal just came from behind to push the ball in.

The goal awoke the Valencian team and they started to have clear opportunities, at minute 32, Pablo Fornals found the ball at the left corner of the area, and his crossed and drilling attempt was saved by Rubén Martínez.

Despite the local pressure, Depor were still trying to attack, a couple of good attacks didn’t end in opportunities due the intervention of the defence and local goalie Sergio Asenjo, who blocked Andone when he was trying to collect a drilling pass inside the area (34’). The first half ended with Depor giving the impression that it didn’t deserve the disadvantage in the scoresheet.

Depor improved in the ball possession, but it wasn’t creating scoring chances. It was until Sidnei decided to join the attack that the Galicians broke the deadlock that allowed the deserved equalizer and to conquer a valuable point.

The final part started with the same script: Both Villarreal and Depor were trying to attack, the locals always based in the ball possession, and Depor with quick transitions defence-attack. This time the visiting side had the ball a little more, mainly thanks to Adrián and Carles Gil, the most active players for the Galicians.

The first chance in the half came at minute 51, Castillejo collected a pass at the left side of the area, and his low shot was repealed by Rubén Martínez. The first substitution at Depor was the entry of Çolak for Carles Gil, the Valencian was important in the game, but was already tired. Neither the Turkish was noticed.

At minute 61, Enes Ünal collected a low pass and his shot was saved by Rubén.  Depor were getting desperate, the score was narrow, but the chances weren’t arriving. The first one for the Galicians in this half came at minute 69, Adrián got the ball at the right side of the area, but instead of assisting Andone he attempted a low shot that was blocked by Asenjo.

Parralo only risked until the end and Borja Valle replaced Mosquera. The team was missing ideas, but neither Villarreal CF were creating harm, and the play that broke the deadlock was the decision of Sidnei of joining the attack.

The Brazilian got the ball at midfield, instead of trying to assist a partner, he ran towards the area, the locals had eight players at the back, but were surprised by the move. The centre-back reached the left corner of the area without too many opposition and ended releasing a volley into the path of Florin Andone, and the Romanian scored with a perfect downward header.

With the 1-1 in the scoresheet, Bruno Gama replaced Adrián and both sides had their attempts to win the game, the main one was a counterattack for Villareal CF in which three attackers were facing three defenders, and Bacca sent the ball out firing from the edge of the area (89’).

Deserved point for a Deportivo that didn’t commit errors in defence and that seized one of their few opportunities to get a draw visiting one of the big teams in the league. All thanks to Sidnei and his vision to join the attack at the precise moment.

Depor are now out of relegation as Alavés lost visiting Athletic Club (2-0). The next game is the visit of Valencia CF to the Riazor (Saturday, 20h45 CET).
