MATCHDAY 35: CHAMPION AND RELEGATION DEFINED

02 May 2018
FC Barcelona achieved the title in liga, while Deportivo suffered the relegation. Only the race for the Europa League remains alive with only three games remaining in the calendar.

May won’t be a hot month in la liga, at least for the major part of the clubs, because the major part of things are already closed. In matchday 35, FC Barcelona secured the title after a 2-4 win at the Riazor with the Galicians coming back from a 0-2 situation. It’s the 25th title for the Catalans.

Atlético Madrid defeated Alavés on the road (0-1) and kept the four-point advantage over Real Madrid, Los Merengues won 2-1 at home facing CD Leganés. Valencia CF could only get a 0-0 draw hosting SD Eibar and could have unexpected problems to qualify for the Champions League.

Because Real Betis defeated Málaga CF (2-1), Los Verdiblancos have added 22 of the last 24 points in dispute and are eight points behind the fourth place, though it remains difficult with only three games remaining. The point is that Betis already secured a spot in the Europa League.

Precisely, the battle for the remaining two spots in the Europa League is the only thing that remains alive in la liga. There are eight clubs with the possibility of getting those spots. Villarreal CF breath fresh air with their 4-1 win hosting RC Celta and are sixth, while Getafe CF are seventh thanks to their 1-1 draw against Girona FC.

Sevilla CF are eight after a disappointing 2-1 loss at Levante UD. It cost the job to Vincenzo Montella (the new coach is Caparrós), but the Andalusians remain only one point behind with one more game to play after skipping last weekend’s game due to the final in Copa Del Rey. At this point even Real Sociedad have options to enter in Europe after their 3-1 win over Athletic Club.

Meanwhile the race of to avoid demotion is over. The victory of Levante UD, combined with the defeat of Deportivo, left the Galicians back at Segunda. They are joining Málaga and UD Las Palmas, the latter drew with RCD Espanyol (1-1). It’s the first time in the history of la liga that the relegation is decided when three matchdays are still to be played.
