Poor Galician derby between two teams that barely created opportunities. Rubén committed a new error and Lucas scored at the last minute.

Clarence Seedorf sent the expected lineup for the game. Rubén Martínez was the starting goalie, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Luisinho played on the left, then Fabian Schär and Raúl Albentosa were the centre-backs.

Michael Krohn-Dehli, Guilherme and Celso Borges were the trio at midfield, then Emre Çolak was playing behind the attacking duo, Adrián López and Lucas Pérez. Around 400 Depor’s fans travelled for the game despite the team was already relegated to Segunda.

At RC Celta, Juan Carlos Unzué presented the expected 4-2-3-1 formation. Maxi Gómez was the main reference in attack. Daniel Wass, Brais Méndez and Pione Sisto were the trio playing behind the Uruguayan.

Bad first half by Deportivo, Rubén committed an error that cost a goal and Depor fell down for some minutes. Los Blanquiazules improved within the last fifteen minutes, but it was only good to complete a shot on target.

The game was intense since the start, though both sides weren’t creating chances to score. The first approximation for RC Celta was a corner-kick from the left in which Maxi Gómez didn’t find the ball at the far post (5’). Depor’s first approximation was a low cross by Çolak that was blocked by local goalie Sergio Álvarez (9’).

Then Depor were going to concede the first goal in the first shot on target by the rival, and again it was a big error of Rubén. Pione Sisto got the ball at the left corner of the area, he released a shot that was blocked and it turned into a volley. Depor’s goalie should have got the ball, but somehow, he moved back and out of the play after touching Maxi Gómez, who headed the ball backwards and into the net.

The goal encouraged a Celta that became the clear ruler of the game, while Depor were lost. Çolak was well marked and the team was failing a lot of passes at midfield, so the locals didn’t have any worry at the back zone and were focused in searching for the second goal.

But Depor tried to make a step forward at the middle of the first part, it also opened the road of the counterattack. At minute 28, Çolak was marked by two rivals and tried to pass the ball into the edge of the area, it turned into a volley that assisted Maxi Gómez, who eluded Juanfran to end releasing a shot that was deflected by Rubén.

The best chance for Depor in the first half came at minute 35, Guilherme collected a loose ball at the edge of the area and his curved shot was deflected by >Sergio Álvarez. Depor ended the half having the 51% of the ball possession, but it was only good to complete a shot on target.

Deportivo improved a lot in the final part, the entry of Fede Valverde unblocked a team that had more fluidity, but that was unable to create opportunities. Still, Lucas showed up at the last minute to rescue a point

Çolak picked a muscle problem at the end of the first half, but the entry of Fede Valverde for him was a tactical substitution as Seedorf explained after the game. The change helped Deportivo, now the game was unclogged at midfield. The first approximation for Depor in this half was a low cross from Adrián that was searching for Lucas, but Sergi Gómez cleared the ball first (47’).

The second chance for Depor in the half was a corner-kick in which a short cross by Guilherme was headed by Michael Krohn-Dehli, his attempt went close to the far post (49’). In the next play Pione Sisto attempted a strong shot from the edge of the area that was deflected by Rubén.

The game lost speed since minute 50 due to the fouls, a conflict Schär-Maxi Gómez cost a yellow card for each player plus the substitution to the later due to an injury. At Depor, Borja Valle replaced Adrián and the interest started to fade away.

Andone was the last substitution of Depor, he replaced Krohn-Dehli. Seedorf had three strikers on the field, but the team was having big problems to create any danger. Los Blanquiazules were surrounding the area, but their best chance was a cross from Borja Valle that was deflected by Cabral and that almost surprised Sergio Álvarez (80’).

And when the game was about to end, Depor found the equalizer. A throw-in at the last minute ended in a cross from the left, the ball went into the path of Andone at the near post, the Romanian was backwards the goal and was marked by a rival, and he decided to pass the ball into the near post, Lucas arrived there on time to connect a strong shot past Sergio Álvarez. Both sides had the chance to win the game, but neither Pione Sisto (90+2’) nor Albentosa (90+4’) met the target with their attempts.
Tasteless derby. Game without too much excitement and with only a few chances to score.  Celta were better in the first part, Depor in the second, one goal for each side and one pint that isn’t good for anyone, mainly for the locals as thy will hardly reach the Europa League zone.

Deportivo have now only two more games at Primera as the relegation is already decided, the next meeting is the visit of Villarreal CF to the Riazor (Saturday, 18h30 CET).
