The first signing of the season 2018/19 arrives when the previous season hasn’t even ended and before the arrival of a new coach. Goalkeeper Dani Giménez is the first signing of Carmelo Del Pozo at Depor.

Dani Giménez is the first signing of the season 2018/19. The Galician goalkeeper will be 35 in July and passed the medicals on Wednesday, then the club announced that he is signing a two-year contract with the club. Later the player confirmed that he has the option of a third season if he plays 45 games in the previous two seasons.

It was a surprising move, first before the operation was completed only a couple of days after the Primera season ended, later because it is taking place even before the club has decided who will be the coach (the exit of Seedorf was confirmed only one day before). This is the first move completed by new director Carmelo Del Pozo, who met Giménez during their stage at Real Betis.

Before completing the medicals, Giménez conceded an interview to La Voz de Galicia and explained why he is signing for Depor, “I’m very excited to go back to Galicia. In this decision there have been several factors. On one hand, to return to Galicia. Then, Carmelo is in the sporting director, because I've known him for years and I know how he works. And the side calling me is Depor. A historic club. I had things from Primera, but Depor is Depor even at Segunda. And that challenge to return the club to its rightful place is what made me decide so quickly. At this stage of my life, I know it would have been more comfortable to sign for a Primera or even go abroad, but I like the challenges and the land factor, to return home, has also pulled me a lot.”

Giménez was born in Pontevedra and made his youth career with RC Celta. From there he jumped to Zamora, a Segunda B club where he played 131 games between 2005 and 2009. He then jumped to Rayo Vallecano, place where he coincided with Rubén Martínez. Giménez was the second choice and only played 24 games in two years (2009-2011).

Rayo were promoted to Primera, and Giménez had the chance to debut at the elite (13 games), then he jumped to AD Alcorcón and made a sensational season for the Segunda campaign 2013/14. He played the 42 games and allowed 40 goals, only SD Eibar (28) and Deportivo (36) allowed less.

That performance opened the doors of Primera and he was signed by Real Betis, club where he has been since 2015. Once again Giménez was a second choice as he was the substitute of Adán. That’s why he has only played 4 league games within the last three seasons.

On the season that has just ended Adán suffered an injury and Giménez replaced him for the last 39 minutes of the visit to Atlético Madrid (April 22, 0-0). And in the next three games he was the starting choice and didn’t allow a goal against SD Eibar (2-0), Girona FC (1-0) and UD Las Palmas (1-0).
