Christian Santos is the fifth signing for the season 2018/19. He rescinded with Alavés and hours later he was announced with Depor. He will undergo the medicals and sign a two-year deal.

Christian Robert Santos Kwasniewski was announced as the fifth signing of Depor, just hours after Pedro Sánchez. The 30-year-old striker is rescinding with Alavés and will sign a two-year-deal with Depor after he completes the medicals.

Christian Santos is a Venezuelan striker with a multicultural life. He was born in Venezuela, but has been living in Europe since the age of 6. His mother was born in Guyana and is descendant of Germans, while his father is Galician.

He was formed at the academy of Arminia Bielefeld and, after shinning with Belgian second-tier KAS Eupen, had problems to find regularity at the Jupiler Pro League, mainly due to a knee injury. And his breakthrough came with NEC Nijmegen at the second-tier of The Netherlands.

It was the season 2014/15 and his side smashed the competition and only lost three games (he didn’t play in two of these three matches) to end adding 101 points and conquer the promotion to the elite. He scored 23 goals in 35 games despite been frequently used as a winger and even as a fullback.

One year later, with the team competing at the Jupiler League, he was finally moved to the centre of the attack and ended scoring 16 goals in 30 matches. It was the dreamed season for him though he had problems with the club for saying at the middle of the season that he was eager to join a stronger league at the middle of that campaign.

So, it wasn’t strange to see him leaving in the summer of 2016, though the surprise is that he rescinded his contract. He was signed by Alavés and there were high hopes on him, but by December of 2017 the Basque club was already trying to get rid of him.

The true is that he never was part of the plans for Mauricio Pellegrino neither of the four coaches that worked with Alavés during the 2017/18 campaign. He only made 31 league appearances in two years scoring five goals. Riazor should remember him from the 2-2 in Copa (January 3, 2017), match in which he scored the first goal in a 2-2 draw.

This is the fifth reinforcement for Deportivo ahead of the season 2018/19 after the signings of goalkeeper Dani Giménez, left-back Sebastián Dubarbier, winger Pedro Sánchez and the return of midfielder Álex Bergantiños.
