Very expensive defeat for a clueless Deportivo that barely created chances to score despite what was at stake. Lugo had a solid defence and won thanks to a great striker from Lazo.

Coach José Luis Martí decided to repeat the lineup. For the first time since his arrival, the Majorcan was presenting the same team in consecutive games. Álex Bergantiños was cleared to play and Nahuel Leiva stayed at the starting eleven.

Dani Giménez covered the goal, Eneko Bóveda played at the right side of the defence, the left was for Saúl García. The central positions were covered by Pablo Mari and Domingos Duarte. Edu Expósito joined Álex at midfield. Fede Cartabia attacked from the right wing, Nahuel did it from the left, then Carlos Fernández and Quique González were the centre forwards.

At CD Lugo, Coach Eloy Jiménez decided to return into a 4-4-2 formation. Edu Campabadal returned into the right side in defence, while the references for the goals were Manu Barreiro and Christian Herrera.

Flat performance by Deportivo in the first half, the visiting team was pressed in several frames of the half and didn’t make good decisions passing the ball. The result was a game without clear opportunities before a willful rival without punch.

The game started with a possible penalty at each side, first Cristian Herrera fell inside the area when he was passing in the middle of two defenders, no penalty was called (5’). In the next play the counterattack led by Quique González ended with a shot of Carlos Fernández that hit the arm of a defender, neither the penalty was conceded.

Deportivo looked nervous and committed mistakes passing the ball, in one of those occasions Cristian Herrera missed the target with a volley firing from outside the area (7’). Cartabia had the next chance with a direct free-kick that went over the crossbar (12’).

Los Blanquiazules were making too many mistakes passing the ball, so they didn’t feel comfortable as their attacks weren’t ending in opportunities, and in defence it cost some problems, like the shot of Manu Barreiro after Álex lost the ball at midfield (15’).

The first shot on target came at minute 25, a corner-kick for Deportivo ended with the ball reaching the path of Edu Expósito and his low shot was an easy catch for local goalie Juan Carlos Martín. Deportivo started to have longer ball possessions, but they didn’t find the way to break the thick local defensive line. Nothing more occurred within the final fifteen minutes.

Déjà vu. Deportivo once again committed an error in the output of the ball and once again it cost a goal. With the score against them, Los Blanquiazules created some chances, but it wasn’t enough to rescue the result.

Things didn’t change at the start of the second half, Deportivo continued to be an erratic team at the moment of passing the ball and CD Lugo were looking better, though the locals also seemed too slow moving the ball in offensive positions.

The first big chance in the second half was for Deportivo, after two straight corner-kicks, Edu Expósito collected the ball at the edge of the area and his strong shot hit the crossbar (54’). Three minutes later José Carlos Lazo attempted a shot from long-distance and Dani Giménez made the save.

That turned to be a warning of what was coming, because in their next attack, CD Lugo were going to take the lead. Again, Deportivo failed the output of the ball, Seoane made the play after Carlos Fernández los the ball at midfield and Lazo scored with a strong shot from outside the area.

Martí was desperate and made a double substitution. Borja Valle and Pedro Sánchez replaced Bóveda and Nahuel. With twenty minutes left, the game turned into a trap, Depor weren’t finding the way to break the local defence, and CD Lugo were only waiting to release the counterattack.

Still, Depor should have scored the equalizer at minute 74. Quique González volley the ball into the area, Carlos Fernández was alone before Juan Carlos and his low shot was deflected, Quique González collected the  loose ball and his shot went over the crossbar.

Christian Santos replaced Álex Bergantiños in the last substitution of Depor, and the visiting side had several corner-kicks, in one of them Carlos Fernández but the action was ruled out for an inexistent offside  because a defender headed the ball first and the goal should have counted (85’)., CD Lugo was the side having the last chance to score, again Lazo appeared in a counterattack and his strong shot was saved by Dani Giménez (86’).

Painful defeat for a Deportivo that’s almost out of the playoff. The team never felt comfortable on the pitch and was unable to break a thick defensive line. CD Lugo always knew how to manage the situation, waiting and launching the counterattack, and when it was necessary wasting time.

Depor are now two points under the sixth position, and with only three games remaining, it needs to win the remaining games and to wait for the failure or CD Cádiz or RCD Mallorca, precisely the Majorcans are the next rival as they visit the Riazor (Monday, 21h00 CT).
