Deportivo announced on Saturday that Fede Cartabia has been loaned to Al-Ahli. The deal includes a buyout option, the amount seems to be €1.5 million.

It was made official on Saturday, Fede Cartabia has been loaned to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli ahead of the season 2019/20. The deal includes a buyout option that can be executed at the end of the season, the club didn’t reveal the amount, but it’s commented to be around the €1.5 million. The exit if part of the measures made by the club in order to fit the salary cap into the current financial situation of the club.

Fede Cartabia lived two stages at Deportivo; he arrived loaned from Valencia ahead of the season 2015/16. The Argentine playmaker had problems to adapt to the team, either by physical problems or for his shy personality, in the first round he barely appeared. Everything changed for the second part of the season, moment when he was the best player at the team. Víctor Sánchez used him more as a right winger and the difference with him on the field was noticed. Cartabia was the only player that improved his level in the second round and ended the season with three goals in favour plus three assists.

The club wanted his return, but it was possible until the campaign 2017/18; actually he was signed in January of 2017 after he rescinded with the Valencians. He was loaned to SC Braga and returned to A Coruña only to witness the relegation of the team to Segunda. Despite the disastrous campaign, Cartabia was among the best players at the team and decided to stay.

In the season that just ended, the Argentine player had an acceptable performance, but the problem was that more was expected for a player considered to mark the differences in the league. His physical problems didn’t bring the needed continuity, he scored two goals and provided nine assists, the latter was the fourth best mark in the league. At least he appeared when Depor needed him the most, during the playoffs, though Martí reserved him for the final ten minutes of the second-leg gam with RCD Mallorca, too little time to change the course of what turned to be a disappointing season for Deportivo.

Deportivo have now released seven men that were under contract ahead of the new season. The first one was goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, who was loaned to AC Omonia Nicosia. Later centre midfielder Edu Expósito and striker Quique González were transferred to SD Eibar. Juanfran Moreno rescinded his contract in order to sign for Turkish club Alanyaspor, while Pedro Mosquera did the same to end at SD Huesca. The previous departure was the loan of left-back Gerard Valentín to CD Lugo.
