Dreamed debut for Deportivo at Liga Iberdrola. The team dominated, deserved to win and clinched the victory thanks to the brace of Alba Merino and a goal from Peke.

Deportivo were debuting at Liga Iberdrola 2019/20, their first experience at the elite of female football. Coach Manu Sánchez was having the casualties for injury reasons of Silvia Mérida, Érika and Maya Yamamoto.  The lineup was the same one that defeated Portuguese champion SC Braga in the last friendly of the pre-season (2-4).

It was a good debut for Depor Ladies, the team dominated the game and had the better opportunities. Tere Abelleira commanded the team, Alba Merino scored the goals and Athenea del Castilla shone with her solo movements in the second half.

The first chance to score was a cross of Peke that Gaby met inside the area and visiting goalie Miriam de Francisco ‘Mimi’ made the save (8’). The locals were having confidence and Tere Abelleira was commanding midfield territory.

And the ladies were going to score their first goal at the elite at the middle of the first part. Michelle Romero and Tere Abelleira had a double chance at minute 24, in the resulting corner-kick Nuria Rábano connected the ball and Mimi made the save at the goal line, Alba Merino was there to collect the loose ball and pushed the ball in.

The goal just reinforced the dominance of Deportivo, the ladies were pushing for more led by Tere Abelleira and Michelle Romero.  The first clear chance for the visiting team was a lateral free-kick that Villegas cleared inside the area (36’). The first half ended with Peke releasing a cross that turned into a shot on target and that Mimi cleared at the goal lane (44’).

The second half started with a good chance for Deportivo, Cris Martínez entered the area by the right flank and his low shot passed close to the post (50’). Two minutes later Esther Sullastres saved Deportivo clearing an attempt of Eli.

Alba Merino was close to score the second after connecting a corner-kick of Tere Abelleira, but she missed the target (57’). María Méndez was the first substitution as she replaced Nuria Rábano. The move pushed Villegas into the left side of the defence, while Méndez cover the spot at the centre.

The second substitution was the entry of Athenea Del Castillo replacing Michelle Romero and immediately she was close to score in an attempt saved by Mimi at the goal line (63’). And then RCD Espanyol equalized the score.

Substitute Ayaka Noguchu released a cross from the right and Paula Moreno met the ball inside the area to score from close range. Deportivo had been the best team until this point, so the equalizer could be considered as unfair. But the ladies were going to react and scored consecutive goals.

First Peke made a solo-play that ended with an impressive shot that Mimi barely deflected, the ball hit the post later and went in, and the third goal arrived soon, Athenea Del Castillo made a great play, dribbling three rivals to end fouled inside the area, and Alba Merino scored the third goal from the spot.

The game seemed defined, but there were more chances score within the final ten minutes. Sullastres made a great save after blocking the header of Eli (82’). Depor replied with a new solo-play of Athenea, she assisted Peke and Mimi made the save (84’).  Venezuelan Kika was the last substitution as she replaced Peke.
