A miraculous victory in the added time, Depor were deserving the draw, and get the win despite the Galicians had to wait until the added time after seizing the errors of the rival.

Coach Fernando Vázquez presented the expected scheme, a 5-3-2, but with novelties as Iago Gandoy was on the bench. Vicente Gómez was a starter and Víctor Mollejo joined Claudio Beauvue in attack.

Dani Giménez was the starting goalie, David Simón covered the right side in defence, the left flan was for Luis Ruiz. Álex Bergantiños continued at the centre of the defence, he joined Javi Montero and Mujaid Sadick in those positions. Ager Aketxe and Uche Agbo joined Vicente at midfield. Claudio Beauvue played in attack together with Mollejo.

At SD Ponferradina, coach Bolo left Yuri de Souza on the bench. Álex Aizpuru ‘Kaxe’ was the centre forward. Óscar Sielva, Nacho Gil and Ivi López were the other references in attack.

Deportivo was the best team in the first part, mainly through David Simón and Ager Aketxe, but the Galicians wasted the best opportunities to score. The visiting side looked dangerous in the counterattack.

The first minutes were dynamic, Mollejo had a blocked shot from inside the area (2’), and in the resulting corner-kick SD Ponferradina unleased a counterattack that ended with Katxe falling before the pressure of Mujaid. At minute 7, Aketxe made a great pass to Luis Ruiz, but his cross didn’t find a receiver.

At minute 10, Aketxe appeared again and released a long pass to Claudio Beauvue, who was unable to define when he was running towards the goal. SD Ponferradina also looked dangerous in the counterattack, but Deportivo was the side having the best arrivals.

At minute 19, another good pass of Aketxe allowed a cross from David Simón and the attempt of Beauvue was saved by visiting goalie Rene Román. In the next play, a lateral free-kick of Aketxe was again saved by the keeper.

Then Víctor Mollejo should have scored after a cross from David Simón, but his header passed close to the near post (26’). Deportivo had played solid 30 minutes, but were unable to seize its opportunities. SD Ponferradina had its first opportunity at minute 34, a counterattack ended with a low shot by Pablo Valcarce firing a low shot that was blocked by Dani Giménez.

An unexpected end to the game, Deportivo were a totally different side in the second part, it was clueless and disorganized team and SD Ponferradina were about get the three points, but their errors in the added time turned to score upside down.

The second half started with a free-kick for the visiting side that Ivi López sent into the path of Dani Giménez (47’). Depor were now having more problems to step into the rival’s area, the locals were still having the initiative, but at the same time they were unable to break the deadlock.

SD Ponferradina started to look better and Pablo Valcarce missed a good chanced heading out a corner-kick (56’).  And the visiting side found the goal. Pablo Larrea found the ball at the edge of the area after a corner-kick action, his low shot was deflected by Dani Giménez, and Kaxe was there to pull in the rebound.

Fernando Vázquez made three changes with Çolak, Hugo Vallejo and Christian Santos entering for David Simón, Vicente and Luis Ruiz. The changes didn’t work and Deportivo were looking clueless.

What happened is that the tactic was to try to exploit the sides with Hugo Vallejo and Mollejo, and both players were unable to beat their marks. The next substitution was the entry of Sabin Merino for Beavue.

No reaction was witnessed and SD Ponferradina were feeling comfortable at the Riazor. Borja Valle replaced Uche Agbo, but Depor continued to be a disorganized team, as example the fact that Christian Santos was the player releasing the crosses instead of been the one waiting for the ball at the area, while Borja Valle was placed as a centre midfielder.

SD Ponferradina had a good chance to define the game at minute 87, Yuri de Souza, who had entered at the middle of the second part, collected a long pass from midfield and he missed to score at the last second after been blocked by Álex, in the following play Sabin Moreno was unable to connect the ball after a cross from the left.

The game seemed over, but Deportivo were going to obtain what seemed to be an impossible victory in the added time, and all for the unexpected distractions of Ponferradina’s defence, sector that failed at the most critical moment.

First in a corner-kick action of Aketxe, the ball went into the far post, Fran Manzanara headed the ball there and went into the head of Pablo Trigueros, who scored an own goal. Later Javi Navarro should have scored in a corner-kick, but Dani Giménez made the save (90+3’).

And in the following play the unthinkable occurred as Depor were going to score the winning goal. Aketxe made the play on the left, dribbling a rival and releasing a drilling cross, and again the visiting defence failed as two inaccurate clearances left the ball into the path of Emre Çolak, who sent the ball into the far post with an accurate low shot.

Deportivo made a meritorious first half, but scored the goals in the second ad just when the defeated seemed imminent. The modifications didn’t work as the team was more disorganized, but the courage plus the errors of the visiting defence gave three golden points.

The victory brings fresh air to a Deportivo that will probably increase the difference with the relegation zone. The next game is the visit to CD Tenerife (Tuesday, Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium, 19h30 CET).
