NOTES FROM THE GAME VS EXTREMADURA UD

14 Jul 2020
Painful defeat for a Deportivo that had everything in favour to caress the permanence. The coach committed two mistakes in the first home defeat of 2020.

1- Unacceptable: There’s a feeling of indignation among the fans after the game, because it’s hard to understand how Deportivo was so fragile to lose a game that was vital, especially taking in mind the circumstances of the rival.  And it’s that Extremadura UD were not only already demoted, but they have a short squad that arrived to the Riazor with several injuries and one suspension. Thus, the visiting side only had 18 players available, 7 of them were academy players (3 of them were starters), and even then they looked better than Deportivo in the second half.

2- The mistakes by Fernando Vázquez: Depor’s coach committed two big mistakes in this game. Frist, he kept the system with five defenders against a rival that wasn’t attacking, the fortress of Extremadura UD was to keep the ball at midfield, and they suffer if the rival puts a high pressure. But instead of putting the extra player at the centre of the field, the coach opted in putting more legs at the back.

Later it wasn’t only that he didn’t change the system for the second half, but that removed the best defender (Mujaid) just to put a more offensive player (Çolak). He replaced three players in defence (Mollejo on the left, David Simón on the right, Bóveda to the centre) and the outcome was that Depor turned into a house of cards that ended allowing three goals in a short period of time. The coach was asked why he replaced Mujaid, but he didn’t explain the reason.

3- Bad day for the defence and Dani Giménez: The error by replacing Mujaid is bigger taking in mind the disastrous performance of the rest of the defensive players. Dani Giménez looked like a rookie in the error of the first goal, and later the keeper should have done better in the other two goals. Montero was too insecure and constantly lost the possession in key sectors, actually it was him who lost the ball on the left in the play of the second goal. David Simón scored, but later he wasn’t too sharp, the same goes for Bóveda, while Álex was never a factor.

4- First home defeat in 2020: Deportivo have only suffered four defeats in 2020, the last two in their last two presentations, and this was the first home defeat in the year, just in the worst moment as the team failed to secure the permanence in this matchday.

5- A nightmare called Pinchi: It cannot be said that this has been a good season for Óscar García ‘Pinchi’, but he has been a real nightmare for Deportivo. The ex-Fabril was directly involved in three of the five goals netted by Extremadura UD against the Galicians in both games. Actually, before scoring a brace at the Riazor he had only scored two goals in the previous 39 matchdays.

6- Two assists for Mollejo: For the first time on this season, a player of Deportivo has provided two assists in the same game. Víctor Mollejo is now the main assistor at Depor with four assists (tied with Aketxe and Koné), while he is the second-best scorer with six goals added to his tally, only one less than Aketxe.
