PREVIEW: COMPOSTELA – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

25 Oct 2020
Vázquez might switch into the 4-4-2 as Depor face a rival that’s keeping the block, but that’s also adapting to the league.

Referee: Pablo Fernández Pérez
Kick-off: 17h00 CET (Vero Boquete)

STATISTICS: FIRST GALICIAN RIVAL IN THE LEAGUE
A Galician meeting between a recently demoted club and a recently promoted side. Apart from RC Celta and CD Lugo, Deportivo have spent a while without facing a Galician rival in a league competition, to be more specific, since last century. Now that the team is at Segunda B, there are five Galician rivals and the first one on the way is SD Compostela.

But Deportivo have faced Galician rivals playing for official competitions in the 2000’s, and it was for Copa Del Rey. It was the meetings against the previous version of SD Compostela (SAD Compostela), plus Racing de Ferrol and CCD Cerceda. Depor have faced Compos ten times playing for league tournaments, and only lost twice, and one of those defeats was the last match between these two outfits: a surprising 2-6 at the Riazor for the penultimate matchday of the Primera season 1997/98.

DEPORTIVO: ONE OR TWO STRIKERS?
Coach Fernando Vázquez is thinking in switching the system into a 4-4-2, he said before the game thar nothing is decided, but on Saturday he tested two systems, the first is the same 4-5-1 used against Salamanca CF, and the second is the 4-4-2 used throughout the pre-season. The modification would mean the exit of Nacho González, and the second spot in attack would be for Miku or Adri Castro.

Team news: The coach picked the same twenty players of the first matchday. Héctor Hernández is the only player at the injury room and Diego Rolan remains in Uruguay. Fabril’s Adri Castro is on the roster for the second straight opportunity.

Man to watch: Striker Claudio Beauvue. It happened with a difference of months, but the French attacker is in a good moment after scoring three of the last four goals of Deportivo in official games. He’s now the reference up front for a team that still trying to find its identity on the pitch.

Picked players: (20) Carlos Abad, Lucho García (goalkeepers); Jorge Valín, Bóveda, Derik Osede, Mujaid, Borja Granero, Salva Ruiz (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Borges, Uche Agbo, Nacho González, Keko Gontán, Lara, Borja Galán, Gandoy (midfielders);  Beauvue, Rui Costa, Adri Castro & Miku (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Carlos Abad – Bóveda, Mujaid, Borja Granero, Salva Ruiz – Keko, Álex Bergantiños, Borges, Lara – Miku, Beauvue.

COMPOSTELA: KEEPING THE BLOCK
Los Picheleiros are back at Segunda B for the first time since 2016, and they are betting in the block as their main strength in order to stay in the third tier of Spanish football. Always under the command of coach Yago Iglesias, this team only lost defender Jorge Queiruga and only made five signings for the current campaign.

So, it wasn’t strange to realize that, of the 15 me used in the opening game with Unionistas, 13 were already with the team during the Tercera campaign 2019/20. Despite this continuity, there are serious doubts about the level and shape of the team, and the por impression left in the opening matchday (2-0 loss) is reinforcing the idea that the team will suffer in order to clinch the permanence.

Team news: The coach will release the roster of the game until Sunday, but it’s already known that three men will miss the meeting. Midfielder Joel López suffered a knee injury during the pre-season and will miss the whole tournament. Then ex-Depor Bicho isn’t recovered from an Achilles injury, and winger Samu Rodríguez is out with an ankle sprain.

Man to watch: Attacker Brais Abelenda. The A Coruña-born player is 24 and has been alternating between performing as a winger and as a striker, and last season was the best scorer at his team with 14 goals added to his tally in the Tercera tournament. SD Compostela search for their goals number 2501 in league competitions and Brais is the main candidate for the job.

Picked players: Roster to be released until Sunday.

Predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Pato Guillén – Saro, Álvaro Casas, Guille Torres, Jimmy – Hugo Sanmartín, Baleato - Miki, Pablo Antas, Brais Abelenda – Primo.
