A disappointing performance of a Deportivo that never showed a superiority facing a rival that fought hard, but that also showed its limitations.

Coach Fernando Vázquez decided to repeat the lineup of the opening matchday and therefore he kept the 4-5-1 formation. He wasn’t at the stadium during the kick-off after his brother died on Saturday, he arrived late in the second part as the funeral took place early in the afternoon. Manuel Pombo was coaching the team on the pitch (Vázquez is still fulfilling a suspension and should have watched the game at the stands).

Carlos Abad was the starting keeper, Eneko Bóveda covered the right side in defence, the left flank was for Salva Ruiz, then the central positions were covered by Mujaid Sadick and Borja Granero.

Nacho González was a starter and was playing in the middle of Álex Bergantiños and Celso Borges. Keko Gontán attacked from the right wing, José Lara did it from the left and Claudio Beauvue was the centre forward.

At SD Compostela, coach Yago Iglesias had some novelties at the starting 4-2-3-1 formation. Ex-Fabril Juampa Barros was a starter, also Josiño Pazas. The references in attack ere Óscar Manuel Conde ‘Primo’ and Brais Abelenda.

Not a good first half for Deportivo. The visiting side showed its superiority in individual duels, but the collective game was poor. Nacho González was too erratic and the midfielders were too advanced on the pitch, and it was there where SD Compostela was damaging, because los Blanquiazules had problems to contain the local transitions and at times the defenders were suffering. In attack, only Keko showed superiority on the right, but Depor didn’t seize this advantage.

The game had a loose start, Deportivo didn’t face a hard pressure at midfield, and had long ball possessions, but it wasn’t creating scoring opportunities. SD Compostela had the first chance to score, Juampa collected the ball at the left side of the area after a quick throw-in, and Abad blocked the low cross (10’).

Depor’s first approximation was a lateral free-kick in which the cross of Keko went wide (12’). Salva Ruiz picked a muscle injury and he had to be replaced by Jorge Valín, the ex-Fabril was now covering the right side in defence and Boveda was switched into the left.

The first big chance to score for Depor came at minute 21, a high cross from Keko wasn’t connected by Borges, but José Lara came from behind and his shot went close to the crossbar. The second chance for Depor came until minute 34, Borges had the ball on the left and his cross was headed out by Claudio Beauvue.

The best chance to score for SD Compostela came at minute 38, Brais Abelenda got the ball inside the area and his crossed shot went out. Borges scored at minute 41, but he was offside after collecting a loose ball in a shot of Keko that was repealed by local goalie Pato Guillén.

Once again Deportivo didn’t feel comfortable on the pitch, the midfielders were too separated and SD Compostela, with its own limitations, were finding the room to unleash their attacks. There was an improvement at the end when the rival got tired, but the visiting side didn’t seize this situation.

SD Compostela pushed in attack since the kick-off, at minute 49, a cross from Miki couldn’t be connected by Primo when he was alone against Abad. The locals looked more vertical and Deportivo started to suffer in defensive positions.

Then Bóveda got injured and had to be replaced by Erik Osede, therefore both side defenders had to be replaced in the same game. Depor’s first approximation in the half was a cross of Álex that didn’t find a receiver (61’).

The next two changes were the entries of Miku and Uche AgboBorges and Beauvue, and Depor gave a step forward. The visiting side started to dominate the actions and Nacho González had a big chance on the game to score a goal, he released a strong volley from outside the area, the ball hit the crossbar and later the back of Guillén and the action ended in a corner-kick (63’).

The locals were tired at this height of the game and Depor had control of the actions, but it lacked speed and more ideas to punish the rival. At minute 71, Nacho sent the ball over the crossbar in a direct free-kick action.

Rui Costa was the last substitution as he replaced Lara, and SD Compostela had a last push within the final minutes, they had the ball in offensive positions and Valín saved the goal after clearing the ball inside the box when a rival was arriving from the back (90+1’)

Disappointing game from a Deportivo that never showed a superiority against a rival that battled hard to add a point. Los Blanquiazules showed again a poor collective football and this time neither the individualities nor last-minute miracles were there to add the victory.

Depor have now added four points in two games, and it’s tied with other three clubs, while the leader is Zamora CF with six (subgroup one). The next game is the visit to Unionistas de Salamanca (Estadio Helmántico, Sunday, 16h00 CET).

Compostela: (4-2-3-1) Pato Guillén – Saro, Álvaro Casas, Soto, Jimmy – Juampa (Gabi Palmás 65’), Josiño (Baleato 74’) - Miki, Pablo Antas (Guille Torres 88’), Brais Abelenda (Hugo Sanmartín 74’) – Primo.
Deportivo: (4-5-1) Carlos Abad – Bóveda (Osede 60’), Mujaid, Borja Granero, Salva Ruiz (Valin 21’) – Keko, Álex Bergantiños, Nacho González, Borges (Uche Agbo 60’), Lara (Rui Costa 83’) – Beauvue (Miku 60’).
