PREVIEW: DEPORTIVO – CELTA B (LIGA)

13 Dec 2020
Deportivo want to end 2020 with a victory and the leadership of the group, and it faces an uncomfortable game against the B squad of the big rival in Galicia.

Referee: Fernando Román Román
Kick-off: 17h00 CET (Riazor)

STATISTICS: NINTH B SQUAD THAT FACES DEPORTIVO
Both coaches agree that the game isn’t a derby, but what it represents is the ninth B squad that Deportivo are meeting in a league competition; the previous eight were Barcelona B, Real Madrid Castilla, Atlético Madrileño CF (Atletico Madrid B), Bilbao Athletic (Athletic Club B), Deportivo Aragón (Real Zaragoza B), Las Palmas Atletico (Las Palmas B), Valencia CF Mestalla (Valencia B) and Villarreal B. The last time Depor lost an official match facing a B squad was 30 years ago: 1-3 at Bilbao Athletic (Athletic Club B) -Sept 23, 1990-

Deportivo arrive to the game after conceding it’s second goal on the season, but the Galicians remain at the top of the standings and as one of the two undefeated team in the subgroup. Meanwhile, Celta B have been going up and down, they were in relegation and suddenly were fourth after chaining two straight victories, but the defeat on last weekend (0-3 Vs. Compostela) put them back into the pit.

DEPORTIVO: NEW CHANGE
Coach Fernando Vázquez has been switching the system lately, the 4-5-1 of the first matchdays was changed for a 4-4-2, and in the last game at Pontevedra CF it was a 5-2-3. Now the coach is returning to the 4-4-2 as, for the first time on the season, he has the four strikers available.

Miku is returning after missing the last two games, so the coach has four strikers and will allow the debut of Rui Costa as a starter. The Portuguese attacker hasn’t impressed, but Vázquez believes that his passing game will be important as the team is getting the pressure from the public opinion in order to have more goal opportunities.

Team news: The return of Miku is leaving the injury room with only two players on it: Derik Osede and Keko Gontán. Both men could have minutes in midweek game for Copa Del Rey. Winger José Lara is suspended and Vázquez decided to not pick anyone from Fabril in order to fill the gap.

Man to watch: Striker Rui Costa. Despite the poor numbers, the striking line is one of the most competitive positions at the team. With Diego Rolan scoring in the last two games, there’s only one spot available, and the Portuguese attacker is getting the big opportunity to demonstrate his skills. He has only played 58 minutes so far and this is his big chance to shine.

Picked players: (18) Carlos Abad, Lucho García (goalkeepers); Eneko Bóveda, Jorge Valín, Mujaid Sadick, Borja Granero, Héctor Hernández, Salva Ruiz (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Celso Borges, Uche Agbo, Nacho González, Borja Galán, Iago Gandoy (midfielders); Claudio Beauvue, Rui Costa, Diego Rolan & Miku (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Carlos Abad – Bóveda, Mujaid, Borja Granero, Salva Ruiz – Nacho González, Borges, Uche Agbo, Borja Galán – Rui Costa, Rolan.

CELTA B: INSTABILITY
RC Celta have been struggling to survive at Primera during the last couple of years, the same has happened with their B squad at Segunda B. After ending fourth on the season 2017/18, the team has barely survived. On the campaign 2018/19, they needed a permanence playoff, and last year only the arrival of Onésimo Sánchez to the bench, plus the pandemic, saved a team that was struggling to survive.

And that instability has continued on the present campaign, because Celta B are having an erratic behavior. They were in demotion with only two points, and suddenly chained two straight victories, which pulled them into the promotion zone, but last weekend they suffered a 0-3 loss with SD Compostela and are back into the pit.

RC Celta have been always been praised for the way the handle their academy, but there’s also the same criticism that Fabril have faced in recent years for the current composition of the squad, and it’s that on the expected starting eleven, only three players are U-23 coming from their base, while there are five foreigners.

Team news: Midfielder Alberto Solis is out until next year after suffering a fibula fracture in the game against Zamora CF (November 22). Right-back Riki Mangana is the other casualty for the match due to a muscle problem. The coach picked two players from the Juvenile squad: defender José Currásand striker Fran López.

Man to watch: Left-back Diego Pampín. It will be a special game for the 20-year-old defender. He was born in Oleiros (A Coruña) and always dreamed to play at Depor, but instead he chose Celta’s academy as he thought it is the best choice in order to progress in the world of football. He is now the captain of the team and one of the six players that have always been a starter during this campaign.

Picked players: (18) Iago Domínguez, Patrick Sequeira (goalkeepers); Lucas Cunha, Brian Ferrares, Souleymane Cissé, Carlos Domínguez, Diego Pampín, José Currás (defenders); Markel Lozano, Gabri Veiga, Raúl Blanco, Jordan Holsgrove (midfielders); Alfonso González ‘Alfon’, Iker Losada, Manu Justo, Zoran Josipović, Bruninho & Fran López (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Iago Domínguez - Ferrarés, Lucas, Carlos Domínguez, Pampín - Markel, Holsgrove, Alfon, Bruninho - Manu Justo, Josipović.
